About Africanskd
Africanskd.org is the editorial side of AfricanSKD, the Street Kids Doing Great Things community led by Kabunga Umar. That community works through dance, education, vocational work and help with everyday needs like food and clothing. This site takes the same idea and turns it into reporting.
Why this site exists
Too much writing about young Africans, and about street-connected youth in particular, starts and ends with what they lack. We think that’s inaccurate, and it doesn’t help anyone. The young people we write about are dancers, apprentices, students, musicians, artists and organizers. They need opportunity, visibility, skills and real support. They don’t need pity.
Who it’s for
We write for youth workers, teachers, mentors, vocational trainers, arts groups, nonprofit leaders, researchers, volunteers, donors and diaspora communities who want to know what works. If you fund, run or join youth programs, we hope you’ll find something here you can use on Monday morning.
What we cover
Six sections: Youth Empowerment, Education, Dance, Music, Creative Arts and Vocational Training. Around them we also report on entrepreneurship, mentorship, youth leadership, employment pathways, safe referral networks, volunteering and responsible giving.
How we write and check stories
- We don’t invent statistics, testimonials or quotes. When a number appears, we link to where it came from.
- We get informed consent before telling any young person’s story, and we leave out names, faces, schools and places that could put someone at risk.
- We explain what a program actually does, who runs it and how long it lasts, not just how it feels.
- We ask young people and communities which support they find useful, and we report what they say.
- When we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change on the page. Send corrections through our contact page.
- Headlines in our live sections belong to their publishers. We link to them and never copy their articles.
