Murals, photography and craft made by young artists

Creative arts coverage includes painting, murals, photography, film, fashion, drama, spoken word and craft. These are skills. For some young people, they’re also the first place an adult took their ideas seriously.

We write about art programs that give young people materials and time, and about the ones that go further: teaching pricing, selling at markets, building a portfolio and pitching for commissions. We look at who gets credit when a mural goes up, whether young photographers are paid when their images appear in campaigns, and how programs handle consent when young people are the subject of the art.

Dignity matters a lot in this section. Art made by street-connected youth is too often used to tell a sad story on someone else’s behalf.
